Michael Fuchs

Sustainability Manager at SCC EVENTS

Michael Fuchs is a doctoral candidate at the Chair of Sports Economics and Sports Management at the University of Leipzig and a passionate outdoor sports enthusiast (trail running, climbing, hiking/touring). His interest in outdoor sports led to numerous activities with sporting goods manufacturers and is also reflected in the research focus of his dissertation, which revolves around the implementation of the circular economy principle in the outdoor sports goods industry and its acceptance by consumers. Beyond the focus of his doctoral thesis, he also conducts research on topics related to sustainability in organised sports (currently on the ecological sustainability of sports facilities, ecological sustainability as a logic in professional football, and the consideration of institutional fan participation in German professional football from a social sustainability perspective). In his spare time, he volunteers for the NGO Climate Fresk, which aims to communicate the mechanisms behind the phenomenon of climate change in a playful way.

After completing his bachelor's degree in sports management and communication in Cologne and London (Canada), he completed his master's degree in sports management in Leipzig and Guadalajara (Mexico). He then worked as a research assistant and doctoral candidate at the Chair of Sports Economics and Sports Management from 2019 to 2023. In 2022, he completed a research stay at the Laboratoire sur les Vulnérabilités et l'Innovation dans le Sport (L-ViS) at the University of Lyon 1 to further his education in the field of multivariate analysis methods. The title of his doctoral thesis is ‘From linear to circular: An analysis of the circular economy concept in the outdoor sporting goods industry from an institutional theory perspective’. He is currently continuing his doctoral thesis as an external doctoral candidate and is supporting SCC EVENTS GmbH, which organises the Berlin Marathon, among other events, as a sustainability manager with his expertise.
