Peter Kuhn

Professor (retired) of Sport Science at the University of Bayreuth

Peter Kuhn is a pioneer of empirical sport ecology in the German-speaking world. His dissertation "Indoor-Sport und Ökologie" (full text), published in 1996, anticipates what is now considered the theoretical basis of sustainable sports development: creating structures in which people can do what they consider ecologically sensible with good arguments.

Peter Kuhn was probably the first researcher to describe the systemic relationship between nature, society and sport. At least for the German-speaking world, this can be documented.

The original of this graphic can be found in his dissertation (1996, p. 60). Kuhn developed it in 1992, at the very beginning of his studies on the ecological impact of everyday sport—as a pencil drawing. The systemic and hierarchical relationship between the dimensions of sustainability, as we later find in Raworth (2018) or Ibisch et al. (2019, pp. 59ff), is already laid out here. The model anticipates what we now call “strong sustainability”.
