Ina Danquah

Hertz-Chair "Innovation for Planetary Health" in Transdisciplinary Research Area (TRA) “Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Futures”; Director at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn

Ina Danquah is the Hertz-Chair for “Innovation for Planetary Health” in the Transdisciplinary Research Area (TRA) “Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Futures” and a member of the three-person executive board at the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn (since October 2023).

Ina Danquah is a nutritionist specialized in population health research (epidemiology). Since 2019, Danquah has been conducting research on the interactions between climate change, nutrition, and health. In her work, she draws on the concept of sustainable diets that are healthy, climate- and environmentally friendly, culturally acceptable, and affordable. Danquah develops, implements, and tests adaptation strategies to address the impacts of climate change in the Global South. She also uses participatory approaches to design, implement, and evaluate climate protection measures in the food sector that provide additional health benefits. As a nutritional epidemiologist, Danquah conducts research to characterize the dietary behavior of populations in sub-Saharan Africa and migrants in Europe. She investigates the dietary links with obesity and cardiometabolic health and is interested in the interactions with undernutrition and infectious diseases.

Danquah leads the DFG-funded Research Group “Climate Change and Health in Sub-Saharan Africa” and is co-coordinator of the Horizon Europe project “Changemaker” on sustainable health interventions for adolescents in urban areas of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Ina Danquah studied nutritional science at the University of Potsdam and the University of Ghana, earned her Ph.D. at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, and obtained an MSc in epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). Her work combines nutrition science, epidemiology, global and planetary health, and sustainability, with a recurring focus on making nutrition healthier for both people and the planet.
